Dr. Deborah Proctor, who earned a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Educational Technology, presented two sessions at the Convergence of Learning, Libraries and Technology conference held in March and hosted by the Ohio Digital Commons for Education. She presented “What Do the Digital Natives Want? Issues and Priorities of Online Students” and co-presented “Blank Easel: What is a Canned Course? Faculty Perceptions of Courses Created by Others.” The presentations focused on the interactions of faculty and students in an online learning environment.
2004
Neil Schafer, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, is the coordinator for Norristown Area High School’s Health Sciences Small Learning Community in Norristown, Pa. The organization recently brought more than 350 students and 24 teachers together with a local hospital and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to raise breast cancer awareness.
1993
Dr. Joann Joyner, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, became a SEEK counselor and affirmative action officer at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, N.Y. Joyner provides mental health counseling services to the student population.
2006
Suzanne Palmer, who earned an M.P.H. with a concentration in Community Health Education, was profiled in The Post-Standard on Syracuse.com. Palmer is a public health educator with the Cayuga County Department of Health in Auburn, N.Y.

Dr. G. Stan Reeley Jr., who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change, had an article, “The Impact of External, Socially Synthetic Forces, Such as Mass Media, Video Games, and the Internet, on Human Behavior,” published in Essays in Education. The article explores the impact mass media, the Internet and other desocialization distractions might have on today’s young people and future leaders.
2004
Matthew Redmond, who earned an M.B.A., published “60 Minutes to a Solution,” an article about hosting better business meetings, in the February 2007 issue of Quality Progress.
Dr. Stephanie Thankappan, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change, recently returned from a tour in India where she lectured and taught at the World Yoga Congress conducted by the Indian Sports and Youth Affairs and Olympic Association. Thankappan and her partner, Guru Dileepji, were presented with the International Siva-Shakti Award for their work propagating yoga in families. While in India, Thankappan and Dileepji also met with government and political officials.
1998
Dr. Sharon T. Freeman, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was named Small Business Journalist of the Year by the All American Small Business Exporters Association. Freeman received Walden’s 2005 Outstanding Alumni Award for her work as an entrepreneur, author and global change agent. Read how Freeman is promoting growth and export development for small, minority- and women-owned enterprises.
1995
Dr. Alan W. White, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, recently became a contractor with the State Department as an executive advisor to the Afghan Ministry of Interior, which is responsible for national law enforcement and domestic security. White arrived in Kabul in March and will serve a one-year tour.
1994
Dr. Madeline Frank, an international violist and music expert who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, performed in the Great Hall at the Wren Building in a March scholarship concert for the College of William and Mary in honor of the Daniel Pearl Festival Concert Program and the Romayne Leader Frank Charitable Foundation.
2006
Dr. Enid Schwartz, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Health Psychology, presented a two-day workshop in February on “The Laughter Rx: Busting Stress Through Laughter” for the University Medical Center Bone Marrow Treatment Team in Tucson, Ariz. Also in February, she presented her research, “The Use of Humor in Coping with Breast Cancer,” at the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor conference in Panama City Beach, Fla.
2005
Dr. Nancy Musarra, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, is pioneering a community effort to raise money and awareness for refugees from Sudan. Local companies and organizations, including The University of Akron, have donated and raised money to help educate groups of young men widely known as Sudan’s “lost boys.”
2003
Dr. Jacqueline Bock, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, earned her post-doctoral certification in neuropsychology from Fielding Graduate University. Bock has an independent practice in Kenai, Alaska, and serves as the neuropsychologist on the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Diagnostic Team for Alaska’s Central Peninsula region.
Dr. Penny Koepsel, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, accepted the position of clinical and educational consultant for Multi-Health Systems, a publisher of psychological assessments since 1983. Koepsel provides consultant services to schools in Texas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina and North Carolina.
2001
Dr. Yangcha P. Crabb, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, recently became a licensed psychologist in the state of Nevada and is preparing for private practice.
2005
Shadd Schutte, who earned an M.P.A. with a specialization in Public Policy, accepted a position at the Wyoming Department of Education as a project manager for the Wyoming Integrated Statewide Education (WISE) Data System. Wyoming is the first state in the nation to implement a move to the Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) protocol, allowing for best of breed software communication between school districts and the state for both state and federal reporting. WISE allows districts to maintain local control over their school information systems while still being able to utilize a common carrier SIF to report student, teacher and district data to the state.
