1998
Dr. Peter A. Maresco, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, was recently awarded the Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, Conn.) Dr. Marian Calabrese Outstanding Faculty Award. Maresco also presented “Teen Chick Lit: Product Placement Personified” at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association 2007 National Conference in April. His paper, “Using Chick Lit Fiction to Teach Marketing,” was published in the Spring 2007 issue of Academic Exchange Quarterly.
1995
Dr. Virginia Campbell, who earned a Ph.D. in Health Services, was named chief executive officer of University Physicians Healthcare Hospital and Clinics at Kino Campus in Tucson, Ariz. She will play a key role in the strategic planning, program development and management of clinical and fiscal resources. A registered nurse with 22 years of experience, Campbell has worked in a variety of academic and community settings, including the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
2005
Dr. Wendy Johnson, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was appointed regional dean of academic affairs at Kaplan Higher Education. She will direct, oversee and monitor the success of campus student retention plans; ensure that the region adheres to regulatory guidelines; and review data from program advisory boards.
2003
Dr. Cheryl Crozier Garcia, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, will present “Using Core Values as a Means to Accomplish Cultural Change: Two Examples” at the seventh International Conference on Knowledge, Culture and Change in Organizations in Singapore. Garcia is chair of the master’s program in human resource management at Hawaii Pacific University and was recently promoted to associate professor.
2000
Dr. Sherry Robinson, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was granted tenure by Penn State University and promoted to associate professor of business administration.
1996
Dr. Gary Gaugler, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, will discuss integrated circuit reliability prediction using electron backscatter diffraction in the scanning electron microscope at the COTS 2007 Conference in Cleveland August 21–23. He will present in Germany and Scotland on the same topic later this year. Also, Gaugler’s recent work on Amphipleura pellucida diatoms was published in Microscopy Today.
2006
Karen Jan, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing, will have a manuscript, “Avian Flu: Pandemic Preparedness,” published in the November/December issue of Home Healthcare Nurse, a professional contemporary journal serving the educational and communication needs of home care and hospice nurses.
2005
Dr. Artemis Pipinelli, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, received her licensure permit to practice psychology in the state of New York. She will have three presentations, “Forgiveness and Genocide,” “Aging and Ethnicity” and “Sex Trafficking,” at the American Psychological Association convention in August.
1999
Dr. Barbra A. Hughes, who earned a Ph.D. in Human Services, received a 2007 Power of Prevention Award from the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund for her work in the prevention of obesity.
1975
Dr. Augustus Melton Black, who earned a Ph.D., had the basketball court at Cherryville High in Cherryville, N.C., where he is an assistant basketball coach, named in his honor. He was head coach of the Ironmen from 1980–84 and has served as assistant coach since 1994. Black, a mentor to many students, was quoted in a newspaper article saying, "We have had so many great players who have become lawyers, doctors, teachers. I think athletics can teach young people how to be responsible and to carry a load."
