Adebowale Awosika-Olumo, a Ph.D. in Public Health student specializing in Epidemiology, won second place for his student poster at the American College of Epidemiology 2007 Annual Scientific Session.
Dr. Ed Beck, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service and president of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, worked with Nobel laureate Dr. Steven Weinberg and Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz to reverse a proposed academic boycott of Israel. Theresa Brosche, an M.S. program in Nursing student, will present a poster, “A Strategic Partnership Between a Hospital and a College to Address the Shortage of Nursing Faculty,” at the National League for Nursing’s Faculty Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla.
Dr. Gary Burkholder, a faculty member in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, contributed a chapter to a book, Vulnerable Older Adults, that was named among the “Outstanding Academic Titles of 2007” by the library journal Choice.
Ayanna Cooper, an Ed.D. student specializing in Teacher Leadership, was awarded $5,000 from Dollar General for a grant proposal to improve literacy at the International Center in Atlanta where she is employed as an English Language Learners instructional coach.
Dr. Kelley Costner, an associate dean in the College of Education, presented “Seven Principles for Developing a Culturally Responsive Faculty” at the New Jersey Education Association conference.
Shawna Cullen, a Ph.D. in Psychology student specializing in Health Psychology, presented “A Biochemical Analysis of Alzheimer’s Disease” with faculty member Dr. Pat Carmoney at the Society for Neuroscience conference in San Diego.
Lt. Col. Dave Doane, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student specializing in Operations Research, presented "Extreme Value Stream Maps: Generate Strategy-Focused Project Ideas and Increase Momentum" at the annual International Quality and Productivity Center (IQPC) Lean Six Sigma Improvement Week conference. Doane is an Army officer and operations research analyst on the Army staff at the Pentagon. He has served as a deputy deployment director since March 2006. Catherine A. Elwell, a Ph.D. in Human Services student specializing in Criminal Justice, chaired three etiological sessions at the November American Society of Criminology Conference: “Advances in Social Learning/Differential Association Theory,” “Causes and Consequences of Labeling for Individuals and Organizations: Labeling and Shaming,” and “Theoretical Advances in Studying Offending: Integrated Theories.”
Solomon Fakinlede, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student specializing in Leadership and Organizational Change, presented "Sustaining Commitment to Organizational Change in the Booming Construction Industry: A Recipe for Higher Productivity" at the International Academy of Business and Economics conference in Las Vegas. That research also was published in the Review of Business Research. He also published “The Effects of Poverty on Leadership Effectiveness” in the Journal of International Society of Business Disciplines. Fakinlede writes, “My sincere appreciation goes to Dr. Godwin Igein, my mentor at Walden University, for excellent mentoring during these studies. Both publications were from the application sections of my Knowledge Area Modules.”
Brian C. Grizzell, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student, will have a research article, “Institutional Servant Leadership: A Catalyst for Urban Community Sustainability,” published in the Journal of Academic Leadership.
Janet Hawvermale, a Ph.D. in Education student, presented “Understanding and Nurturing Giftedness: Strategies for Parents and Grandparents” at the Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted national conference in Kansas City, Kan. Her daughter, Christine Barrow, was co-presenter.
Annette Lee, a Ph.D. in Education student specializing in Special Education, was named the 2007–2008 Beaufort County Schools Teacher of the Year.
Jen Padron, a Ph.D. in Health Services student, was selected to co-present “Peer to Peer Certification in Texas” at the 2007 Alternatives Conference.
Dr. Stacee Reicherzer, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, discussed how humiliation, trauma and exploitation have shaped the transgender experience, on the Sirius Satellite Radio show “OutQ in the Morning with Larry Flick.”
Sandra D. Sjoberg, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student, presented a paper, “Social Capital Theory as a Competitive Advantage,” at the Knowledge and Project Management Symposium held at Oklahoma State University in October. The paper was a direct result of her work in AMDS 8810 Integrating Knowledge Management With Strategic Initiatives taught by Dr. Richard McCarthy.
Dr. Wallace Southerland, a faculty member in the College of Education, recently received a contract offer from VDM Publishing in Germany to publish his dissertation as a monograph. Southerland's dissertation focused on the politics of securing campus budget resources. Additionally, Southerland will present his research results at the Academic Chairpersons Conference in February.
