In the News

Members of the Walden community are making news.

“Having your spouse go through a Ph.D. program with you is the only way to do it. If one person goes through the process, the other person may feel left out. If we're both doing it, there's no pain because we both knew what we had to do.”
—Dr. Eleanor Hoy, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, quoted in the Dec. 9 issue of The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Va.). Her husband, Barry, earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Learning Management.

“I believe that teachers’ beliefs and attitudes shape how they treat their students. If the teacher believes that students can behave appropriately in the class, regardless of ethnic or socio-economic background, then their expectations will be just that, and the students will rise to the occasion. However, if the teacher believes that particular ethnic groups or students from certain socio-economic backgrounds cannot behave appropriately, then the teacher will more than likely expect less and get less. In fact, the teacher may inadvertently contribute to unacceptable behavior by not expecting more.”
—Dr. Kelley Costner, associate dean in the College of Education, answering questions for “Ask the Mentor: Teaching Diverse Populations” hosted Dec. 5 by TeacherMagazine.org, Edweek.org and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development SmartBrief.
