Terri Millison Ackland, a Ph.D. in Education student, was promoted to dean of arts and social sciences at Central Arizona College.

 

Paul A. Ashe, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student, has been appointed to supervisor of International Banks and Trust Corporations by the Financial Services Regulatory Commission.

 

Dr. Lorraine Cleeton, a faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, had two test reviews published in the 2007 edition of Mental Measurements Yearbook. This Buros Institute of Mental Measurements publication includes Dr. Cleeton's “Review of Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome for Children” and “Review of Dyslexia Early Screening Test.” 

 

Heidi Marie Connor, a Ph.D. in Education student, was the chairperson of this year’s Colorado Community College Conference on Composition (5C’s) at Aims Community College in Greeley, Colo., on April 18, 2008. This all-day event is Colorado’s top writing conference for composition instructors.

 

Kelly Crandall, an M.S. in Education student, was honored as one of two “Teachers of the Year” by the Rotary Club in Bristol, Va., in February.

 

Dr. Larry Flegle, faculty member in the School of Management, raised money to rebuild one of the student buildings at Love Thy Neighbor Dormitory in Nan, Thailand. The dormitory houses and trains children in a trade and provides a general education. Dr. Flegle has raised more than $1 million in support of the dorm since 1995. He will also present a paper he co-wrote, “Student-Driven Development of an Online Graduate School Honor Code,” at the 2008 Distance Learning Administration Conference.

 

Dr. Andrew Forshee, faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, published an article, “Turning Off the Gender Autopilot: Meeting the Human Service Needs of Transgender Men,” in the 2007 issue of the journal Human Service Education.

 

Brian C. Grizzell, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student, presented his paper, “Servant Leadership: A Catalyst for Urban Community Sustainability,” in March at The Fifth Annual Yale Bouchet Conference on Diversity in Graduate Education, held at Yale University. He co-presented “Developing an Academic Resume and Proactive Career Planning Strategies for Master and Doctoral Students” at the same conference. Grizzell will co-present “A Contextual Applied Research Analysis of How the MBA Coursework Should Evolve” at the Academic Business World International Conference being held May 26–28 in Nashville, Tenn.

 

Dr. Peter Hoffman-Kipp, a faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, co-authored a chapter titled “Accessing Praxis: Practicing Theory, Theorizing Practice in Social Justice Teachers’ First Year of Teaching” in the edited book Teacher Education With an Attitude, published by SUNY Press in 2007.

 

Daisy Johnson, an Ed.D. student, was profiled as “Teacher of the Week” in the Feb. 20, 2008, issue of the Orlando Sentinel.

 

Steven Keihl, an M.S. in Psychology student, gave presentations titled “The Military Deployment Cycle” and “Screening and Treating PTSD with Military Members” at the March 2008 American Counseling Association annual meeting.

 

Kathy Kem, a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration student, was promoted to associate at BRR Architecture in 2007.

 

Dr. Steven Little, faculty member in the School of Psychology, co-published several articles in 2008, including “Psychology’s Contribution to Education: Introduction to the Special Issue” in Psychology in the Schools, 45, 191–193; “Psychology’s Contributions to Classroom Management” in Psychology in the Schools, 45, 227–234; “Teacher Knowledge of and Confidence in Meeting the Needs of Children with Chronic Medical Conditions: Pediatric Psychology’s Contribution to Education” in Psychology in the Schools, 45, 217–226; “Our Katrina Experience: Providing Mental Health Services in Concordia Parish, Louisiana” in Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, 39, 18¬23; and “Comparing Behavior Support Plans from Schools with and without Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support: A Preliminary Study” in Journal of Behavioral Education, 17, 93–110.

 

Dr. Peter Meyer, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, was appointed by the governor of Vermont to serve on the advisory board for that state's Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living.

 

Dr. Lou Milanesi joined the Office of Student Research Support as an associate director, working with Dr. Bonnie Nastasi and Dr. Dia Sekayi. Dr. Milanesi earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and was the director for the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence–Assessment at Nevada State College and program director for the University of Wisconsin-Stout’s M.S. in Applied Psychology program prior to joining Walden University. He was recently selected to be an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

 

Dr. Bonnie Nastasi, faculty member in the School of Psychology, co-authored a chapter titled “Best Practices in Developing Exemplary Mental Health Programs in Schools” in Best Practices in School Psychology V, published in 2008 by the National Association of School Psychologists.

 

Dr. Joseph Nolan, faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, and Pamela Taylor, a Ph.D. in Education student, published their article, “Universal Design for Living: The Next Logical Step,” in the International Journal of Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations in 2008.

 

Maurice Patrick O'Connor, a Ph.D. in Psychology student, received a Certificate of Appreciation from Madigan Army Medical Center and the Red Cross for “exceptional service as a volunteer counselor in the Psychiatry Intensive Outpatient Program” in February 2008. O'Connor counseled soldiers in this program, which was specifically designed for U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq or Afghanistan who are suffering from a wide variety of mental health issues directly related to their service in these combat zones. He was also recognized for his work in expanding this program.

 

Dr. Mitchell Olson, faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, published an article titled “Using Grounded Action Methodology for Student Intervention—Driven Succeeding: A Grounded Action Study in Adult Education” for the January 2008 issue of the online journal Forum: Qualitative Social Research. Dr. Olson investigated adults’ attempts to reach high school-level competencies.

 

Jen M. Padron, a Ph.D. in Health Services student, presented a poster on “HIV/AIDS/STD/HCV/Co-infection in Severe Mental Illness” at the  rehabilitation conference, From Innovations to Practice, held in Cambridge, Mass., in April, and was selected to present a poster at the Third Biennial International Society for Bipolar Disorders Conference in Delhi, India. She will participate in a GLBT Issues in Psychiatric Rehabilitation workshop at the June national U.S. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association conference in Chicago. Padron was elected co-chair of the Texas Lone Star chapter of the U.S. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, and she has accepted a position with AIDS Services of Austin, leaving Austin Travis County MHMR Community AIDS Resources and Education.

 

Dr. Amany Refaat, faculty member in the School of Health Sciences, is working on the eradication of female genital cutting in Egypt.

 

Dr. Stacee Reicherzer, a faculty member in the School of Counseling and Social Service, presented a lecture, “Beyond Barbie, Ken, and the DSM: Working with the Lived Experiences of Transgender Clients,” at a 2008 workshop for the Alabama Mental Health Counselor Association. Dr. Reicherzer also presented a program, “Of Women, Men and All of Us in Between: Transgender Grounded Theory Describes Counseling in Genderland,” at the American Counseling Association's 2008 convention.

 

Charles Rhoades, a Ph.D. in Psychology student, published his article, “Ethical Considerations in the Use of Sexually Explicit Visuals as an Instructional Methodology in College Sexuality Courses,” in the American Journal of Sexuality Education in 2007.''

 

James Schiller, a Ph.D. in Human Services student, co-authored an article, “Characteristics of Youths with Hearing Loss Admitted to Substance Abuse Treatment,” in the spring 2008 issue of the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education.

 

Dr. Frederick “Rick” Schulze, faculty member in the School of Health Sciences, will present a paper, “Health Disparities and the GLBT Community: Preparing the Health Education Professional for the Community,” at the Society for Public Health Education Midyear Scientific Conference, May 21–24, in Chicago.

 

Dr. Susie (Rebecca) Watts, faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, won the 2007 Louisiana Education Research Association Outstanding Research Paper Award at the association's annual meeting in Kenner, La. She presented her paper, “A Study on the Effects of Smaller Class Size on Student Achievement,” at the American Educational Research Association meeting in New York in March 2008.

 

Dr. Daniel Weigand, a student research coordinator in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, was named editor of Walden University’s Journal of Social,  Behavioral, and Health Sciences.

 

Dr. Elizabeth (Betty) Wilson, faculty member in the School of Management, published an article, “Good Practices in Graduate Online Surveys,” in the fall 2007 issue of the Journal of Adult Continuing Higher Education. Also, Dr. Wilson joined the editorial board of the Journal of Diversity and Social Justice.
