Master’s Program Launched in Nonprofit Management

Qualified nonprofit leaders are in demand to fill critical roles.

Dr. Mark Gordon
Program director Dr. Mark Gordon owns a consulting firm that provides strategic planning and other services to businesses, nonprofits and independent schools.

In September, courses will begin for Walden University’s new M.S. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership program. Offered through Walden’s School of Public Policy and Administration, the program is designed to help working professionals who want to advance their careers and enhance their ability to make a positive impact in their communities.

“Within the last decade, nonprofit organizations in the United States have experienced tremendous growth, creating exciting opportunities for individuals who are committed to serving their communities and to facilitating real social change,” says Dr. Mark Gordon, who directs the program. “This new degree program is designed to provide students with the skill sets they need to manage all types of nonprofits and to help those organizations achieve their mission and vision.”

Opportunities for Career Growth
According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies’ 2006 report, “Employment in America’s Charities: A Profile,” as of 2004, American charities employed 9.4 million paid workers. The report also says that between 2002 and 2004, the nonprofit workforce, including paid and volunteer workers, grew by 5.3 percent. By contrast, overall employment in the economy declined by 0.2 percent during the same period.

Need for Leaders
According to a March 3 article, “Crunch Predicted in the Nonprofit Sector,” in the Washington Post, based on a national study called “Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out,” the nonprofit sector is facing a crisis in leadership because of job attrition and an aging workforce. This crisis further fuels the increasing demand for qualified nonprofit managers.
