What does it take to lead a life of social commitment despite all of the obstacles? What makes some individuals choose lives of social commitment while others abstain?

Dr. Paul Loeb addresses these questions and more in his books Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time and The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen’s Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear, winner of the 2005 Nautilus Book Award in the social change category. Loeb, who has spent more than 30 years researching and writing about issues related to citizen responsibility and empowerment, will share his views with Walden University doctoral students and faculty when he delivers the residency plenary at the September academic residency in Portland, Ore.

In addition to five books, Loeb has written for a range of publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA TODAY, the Los Angeles Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Psychology Today and Parents Magazine. He has been a lead speaker at numerous conferences and has shared his views with audiences at more than 400 colleges and universities.

‘Perspectives on the World’ series
The plenary is part of Walden’s “Perspectives on the World” series that brings diverse global views to the Walden community. Past speakers include Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic and former correspondent for The New Yorker. At Walden’s April academic residency in Lansdowne, Va., Goldberg shared his views on the possibility for reconciliation in the Middle East. At the June international residency held at the University of Liverpool, Dr. John Belchem, a University of Liverpool faculty member, discussed Liverpool’s history and how the city is preparing for the future.
