Funding Opportunities

The Research Center has identified funding opportunities for students and faculty in a variety of areas.

Each month the Research Center features funding opportunities and provides links to more information. Many of these may not apply to this year’s studies, but may be a better fit in later years of your academic career.

The Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program
The program is committed to advancing progressive social change by helping to sustain longtime activists of color. The program honors those who have devoted their lives to helping their communities organize for racial, social, economic and environmental justice. The program provides resources for organizers to take time out for reflection and renewal. Fellows receive a $25,000 award to take sabbaticals of three months or more.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowships
The foundation awards 10 or more fellowships of $15,000 each year to individuals completing the writing of the dissertation within the award year. Particular issues of interest to the foundation concern violence, aggression and dominance in relation to social change, the socialization of children, intergroup conflict, interstate warfare, crime, family relationships and investigations of the control of aggression and violence. Research with no useful relevance to understanding and attempting to cope with problems will not be supported.

ING Unsung Heroes
The awards are given to K–12 educators pioneering new teaching methods and techniques that improve learning. Each year, educators submit applications by describing projects they have initiated or would like to pursue. Of those, 100 finalists are selected to receive a $2,000 award. At least one award is granted in each of the 50 states, provided at least one qualified application was received from each state. Of the 100 finalists, three are selected for additional awards: $25,000 for first place, $10,000 for second place and $5,000 for third place.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The fellowships are grants for up to two years of graduate study in the United States, with 30 fellowships awarded each year. A “New American” is considered to be a resident alien, i.e., holds a Green Card; or a naturalized U.S. citizen; or the child of two naturalized citizens. The applicant must not be older than 30 as of Nov. 1, 2006, and must give evidence of at least two of the following: (1) creativity, originality and initiative, demonstrated in any area; (2) a demonstrated capacity for accomplishment; (3) a commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The Morris K. Udall Environmental Public Policy and Conflict Resolution Dissertation Fellowship
The Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. The fellowships are intended to cover both academic and living expenses from July 1, 2007, through June 30, 2008.
