The recipient also must be responsible for the growth of such programs, exemplify activities that contribute to better understanding of such practices, and participate in research involving distance education.
The honor is the Distance Learning Administration Association’s top annual award and was presented at its annual conference in Jekyll Island, Ga., late last month. At the conference, Flegle presented a paper he co-wrote, “Student-Driven Development of an Online Graduate School Honor Code.”
Flegle also was appointed to the editorial board of the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration, a peer-reviewed journal offered free online each quarter. The journal welcomes manuscripts based on original work of practitioners and researchers with specific focus on implications for the management of distance education programs.
In addition to his instruction of more than 500 online courses for Walden and other learning institutions, Flegle has written an entire undergraduate degree program and has raised more than $1 million to support and rebuild a student building for Love Thy Neighbor Dormitory in Nan, Thailand. The dormitory houses and trains children in a trade and provides a general education.
Among Walden’s recognized experts in distance learning, Flegle stands out as a learner and a 21st century leader. Walden has more than 1,000 faculty members who are specially trained to teach and serve as mentors online.
The conference, conducted at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel in June, was sponsored by the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration and the University of West Georgia.
