NTU Outstanding Student Award

Katie Heiman earned her M.S. in Software Engineering while balancing her work as a software engineer for Lockheed Martin, her family and her education.

Lockheed Martin software engineer Katie Heiman completed Walden University’s mathematically rigorous M.S. in Software Engineering program—earning all As—while balancing her work life and her family life.

At Lockheed Martin, Heiman serves as the lead engineer on a software development team that oversees a project related to a national defense application. In line with efforts by the Department for Defense to increase agility in technology innovation and development and deployment, as well as to lower costs, the project uses commercial, off-the-shelf software components that are integrated into a larger system—work that in itself is a challenging exercise. Heiman successfully provides leadership and technical guidance to her team in order to overcome technology challenges, enhance teamwork and achieve major milestones.

Heiman extended her contributions beyond the professional and academic by volunteering to promote social good and the advancement of women in the engineering industry through the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), an organization that provides mentoring and professional and technical development activities for female engineers. Heiman brings her leadership skills to the SWE, serving as the organization’s treasurer and leading a project to increase the number of SWE local chapters in southeastern New York State.

Heiman was nominated for the award by Dr. Ahmed Naumaan, associate dean of the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science.
