Attend Chicago Academic Residencies

Meet face-to-face with faculty, staff and students from Oct. 15 to 19 in the Chicago area as you hear global perspectives and move toward your goals.

Learn about leading a life of social commitment, by exploring global sociology, from Robin Wright, diplomatic correspondent for The Washington Post, at Walden University’s October Chicago-area (St. Charles) Ph.D. and Ed.D. academic residencies.

Wright draws on 35 years of reporting through wars, revolutions and uprisings, and she offers an in-depth look into what shapes the world’s most volatile regions in the 21st century.

Writing for some of the most noteworthy publications of our times—the Los Angeles Times, The (London) Sunday Times and The Christian Science Monitor, in addition to the Post—Wright developed deep insights into international affairs and foreign policy.

For the Ph.D. residency being held on Wednesday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 19, as well as for the Ed.D. residency on Thursday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct. 19, Wright will deliver the plenary address to doctoral students and faculty. Her appearance is part of Walden’s ‘Perspectives on the World’ speakers series, which brings an array of experience and viewpoints from around the globe to the Walden community.

Wright will describe the birth of new democracy movements and a new generation of activists across two dozen countries. Her foreign tours include five years in the Middle East, two years in Europe, seven years in Africa and several years as a roving foreign correspondent across Latin America and Asia. She also will look at the inner workings of extremist movements.
Registration remains open for both the Ph.D. Residency and the Ed.D. Residency.

About the City

Known for its natural charm, St. Charles, Ill., is tucked into the scenic Fox River Valley and located just an hour west of Chicago. St. Charles’ historic area features clusters of antiques shops and specialty boutiques, and the city offers plenty of recreation, from challenging golf courses and live entertainment to museums and outdoor attractions.

Residency attendees can turn their learning experience into a retreat by spending their few days from home at a resort. In St. Charles, Pheasant Run Resort & Spa is the Midwest’s largest entertainment resort. The beautiful 250-acre facility is within easy reach of both O’Hare International and Midway airports. Pheasant Run offers luxurious guest rooms, championship golf courses, a renowned spa, award-winning dining and three pools.

About Academic Residencies

Walden University academic residencies help prepare students to be scholar-practitioners, connecting them with individual faculty mentors; tools that enhance writing, research and critical thinking; student support staff; and hundreds of peers who share common interests.

Conducted nearly every month for either four or six days at a university, conference center or hotel in the United States and abroad, Walden’s academic residencies provide doctoral students and some master’s students with insights into earning and applying their degrees.

The academic residencies provide a lively learning atmosphere combined with seminars, networking and travel.

To support doctoral students at each stage of their program, academic residencies follow four milestones:

Milestone 1: Orientation (expected within 90 days of completion of Foundations course). The purpose is socialization into Walden, community-building and the attainment of introductory skills.

Milestone 2: Beginning Research (within 18 months of start date). The purpose is to introduce the student to research skills, self-assessment and skill development.

Milestone 3: Dissertation Work (by end of third year). The purpose is dissertation conceptualization and writing.

Milestone 4: Scholar-Practitioner (third year and beyond). The purpose is to present research and publish a dissertation.
