Educator for a Day Grants Available—Apply Today

P–12 schools can receive a $5,000 grant to support the teaching profession and further their educational initiatives.

Your P–12 school, or another deserving school in your area, could receive a $5,000 grant from The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership at Walden University. This is the second year Walden is offering this grant.

Here’s how to seek the support:

First, nominate a school at www.WaldenU.edu/educatorforaday. The nominations deadline is Monday, Oct. 27. Grant recipients will be selected based on responses to questions such as

  • How would your school use a Walden Educator for a Day grant?
  • How will you involve the community in your school’s Educator for a Day participation on Nov. 20?

Second, coordinate school participation in the Educator for a Day event to be held on Thursday, Nov. 20.

For this one-day event conducted during American Education Week, the nominated school must invite members of its local community into the classroom to experience teaching firsthand. Each participating school is responsible for reaching out to individuals in their communities who are interested in serving as guest P–12 educators.

Help spread the word: Forward this information to colleagues who want to make a difference in their communities by getting involved in the Educator for a Day program and possibly earning a $5,000 grant from Walden for their schools.

The Educator for a Day program allows community members to gain insight into a day in the life of a school employee. The program helps the field of education and the teaching profession in key ways: It encourages community members and leaders to step into and understand educators’ roles and contributions. It also provides funding support for important education initiatives at the grant recipients’ schools and it helps districts recruit prospective teachers.

The grants will fund initiatives specific to a school, based on creative ways in which that school reaches into its communities to get non-educators to learn what teaching entails and what it’s like to work inside the school system.

The visiting educator will shadow a teacher and will help perform the duties of a regular educator in a normal day, including teaching class, performing lunch and corridor duty and supervising recess.

Grant recipients can use the funds for an initiative of their choosing. The 2008 recipient schools will be notified on or around November 3.
