About AABHE
The American Association of Blacks in Higher Education (AABHE) pursues the educational and professional needs of blacks in higher education with a focus on leadership, access and vital issues impacting students, faculty, staff and administrators. AABHE also facilitates and provides opportunities for collaborating and networking among individuals, institutions, groups and agencies in higher education in the United States and internationally.

Conference Goals
The major goals of the 2009 AABHE National Conference are:
- To provide a forum to discuss key issues that impact African American students and professionals in the educational pipeline.
- To showcase programs that have effectively impacted closing the gap in the educational pipeline and professionals in the academy.
- To provide a forum to discuss best practices and challenges for faculty tenure, promotion and rank.
- To provide a forum to discuss the integration of diversity and inclusion on college campuses for African Americans.
Strand Areas
Strand 1-- Connecting with Higher Education
This strand will explore an array of critical policy developments, programs, partnerships and linkages between elementary and secondary schools with colleges and universities to close the performance and attendance gap to higher education among African American students. Additionally, this strand will explore the role of non-profit, religious and community organizations and the government to close the performance and attendance gap to higher education.
Strand 2 -- Making it Through Education
This strand will explore results of policy developments and programs for high school students and higher education that demonstrates students success in the classroom, service learning engagement, co-curricular activities, mentoring programs, and increase retention and graduation rates.
Strand 3- Integrating Diversity and Inclusion into the Campus Community
This strand will explore innovative practices, models and policy developments that create an academic community where African American students, faculty and staff thrive and are engaged in the academic and university/college environment.
Strand 4 -- Journeying Through Graduate/Professional Education
This strand will explore the successful program models and policy developments that attract and impact graduate (masters and doctoral), business, law and medical students; and how these schools develop and nurture the pipeline to continue to attract, support, and promote the success for African American students.
Strand 5 Leadership Development and Career Enhancement Strategies for African Americans in the Academy
This strand will explore strategies that support faculty in receiving tenure and promotion; and support faculty and staff in exploring strategies of entering and advancing into senior level administration.
Proposals will be considered late and will not be accepted after 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2008. Presenters will be notified by December 1, 2008. Please forward proposals electronically to blofton@walton.uark.edu.
Proposal Guidelines
ALL PROPOSALS must clearly focus on one of the FIVE identified strands. Proposal submissions must include:
- The title of the presentation (paper to be presented)
- The strand (I, II, III, IV or V) selected for presentation
- An abstract of the presentation (not to exceed 200 words)
- An overview of the presentation (not to exceed four single-spaced pages)
- Conceptually or theoretically strong foundation
- Purpose of the presentation/core issue(s) addressed in the presentation
- What the audience will learn/take-away from the presentation
- How the presentation reflects the selected conference strand
- What major outcomes or issues will be addressed in the presentation
- Follow APA guidelines for style and quality
- The name(s) of the presenter(s)
- The presenter(s) institutional or organizational affiliation
- The presenter(s) title and a brief biography (not to exceed two paragraphs)
- The presenter(s) Include information for ALL presenters
- Mailing address
- Telephone and facsimile numbers
