Community News Walden’s students, faculty and staff are contributing to their disciplines through publications, presentations and other professional activities. Mitch Alexander, a faculty member in the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science, published an article titled "ERP Customization: Vanilla or Rocky Road" in the July 2008 issue of Enterprise Management Quarterly.
Bret Atkins, a Ph.D. in Public Health student specializing in Community Health Promotion and Education, published a book review of Biosecurity & Bioterrorism: Containing and Preventing Biological Threats in the fifth anniversary issue of the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (2008, Vol. 5: Iss. 1, Article 41).
Dr. David Ciampi, a Ph.D. in Psychology student specializing in Clinical Psychology, was invited to be a member of the People to People Psychology Professional Delegation to the People’s Republic of China. The delegation will visit China in November 2008, and Dr. Ciampi will speak to Chinese colleagues about disaster mental health care preparedness and response capabilities in the United States. The trip is under the auspices of the People to People Ambassador Programs, which were established by President Dwight Eisenhower to foster face-to-face understanding between different nations and cultures.
Dr. William Dixon Jr., a doctor of education (Ed.D.) student in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership specializing in Teacher Leadership, was the subject of an article in North Carolina's Roanoke Daily Herald about his appointment as principal of Weldon High School. In the Aug. 22, 2008, article, Dixon discussed his plans for his first year at the school.
Volney Douglas, a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student specializing in Information Systems Management, presented research he co-authored with Brian Grizzell, also a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences student, titled "A Phenomenological Study of Self-Identified Servant Leaders" at the Fourth Annual Business and Leadership Symposium in September at Fort Hays State University. The abstract of their research was published in the proceedings of the symposium.
Richard C. Edwards, a Ph.D. in Public Health student specializing in Community Health Promotion and Education, published an article titled “Interoperability Key: Public Health Departments Dealing with Legacy Systems Should Look to Connect," about the use of electronic records in the health care field, in the December 2007 issue of Healthcare Informatics.
Dr. Amara Ezeamama, a faculty member in the School of Health Sciences, co-published "The Synergistic Effect of Concomitant Schistosomiasis, Hookworm, and Trichuris Infections on Children's Anemia Burden" in the Public Library of Science's peer-reviewed online journal Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Robert Fong Sr., a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration student specializing in Homeland Security Policy and Coordination, published an article titled "Review of Maritime Security: An Introduction" in Vol. 5, Issue 1, of the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
Dr. Ron Fox, a faculty member in the School of Psychology, has received honors from the American Psychological Association (APA). He was elected an APA fellow from the association's Division 44 based on his work with sexual orientation issues. Division 44 also gave Dr. Fox its 2008 Distinguished Book Award for Affirmative Psychotherapy with Bisexual Women and Bisexual Men (Harrington Park Press, 2006), which he edited. Both honors were presented during the 2008 APA Convention in Boston at the Division 44 Awards ceremony on Aug. 16.
Dr. Joan Gipe, a faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, was invited to continue serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Reading Education, a juried publication of the Organization of Teacher Educators in Reading. Gipe has served on the board since 2006.
Dr. Pamela Harrison, a faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, published a book chapter titled "Campus Leadership in Texas: The Effective Principal" in Texas Public School Organization and Administration: 2008 (Kendall/Hunt, 2008).
Wanda Carol Lirette, an M.S. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership student, was chosen by Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal to serve as an at-large member on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Disability Affairs. Lirette is the vocational supervisor at Options for Independence and has been an advocate for people with disabilities for many years.
Paula Moore, a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration student specializing in Nonprofit Management and Leadership, accepted the position of acting chief of staff for the Division of Community and Government Affairs in New York City's Administration for Children’s Services.
Jen M. Padron, a Ph.D. in Health Services student, presented a poster titled "HIV/AIDS/STD/HCV, Coinfection and Seroprevalence in Severe Mental Illness" at the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Canada 2008 Conference, held Sept. 17–19 in Manitoba, Canada.
Dr. Eric Riedel, executive director of Walden’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, co-authored, with Cassandra Scharber and Sara Dexter, an article titled "Students’ Experiences with an Automated Essay Scorer" in the September 2008 issue of The Journal of Technology, Learning and Assessment.
Dr. Sally Scott, a faculty member in The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership, published a chapter she co-authored with Joan McGuire titled "A Case Study Approach to Promote Practical Application of Universal Design for Instruction" in the book Universal Design in Higher Education (Harvard Education Press, 2008).
Linda Snyder, R.N., a student in the School of Nursing, published an article titled “CNE: Wound Basics: Types, Treatment, and Care” that was used as the basis for nursing continuing education credit in the August 2008 issue of the peer-reviewed journal RN.
