Career Services Center Launches Blog

Blog offers up-to-the-minute insights on career development.

In celebration of National Explore Your Career Options Week April 5 to 11, the new Walden University Career Services Center blog will focus on career management, including ways to expand one’s network, how to develop a personal brand, best practices for interviewing, job market trends and book reviews.

Lisa Cook, director of the Career Services Center, says her goal in launching the blog is to get readers in the habit of thinking about career management regularly—not just when it’s time to find a job.

“It’s all about career management now,” Cook says. “Everyone should be thinking, ‘How can I contribute to the mission of my organization? How am I a key player? How do I add value? Am I updating others regarding my accomplishments?’”

The blog will highlight frequently asked questions and success stories from the department’s individual advising sessions. For example, Cook shares the story of one student who networked with a professor at a college in another state via LinkedIn to be considered for a teaching position there.

In another example, the Career Services Center helped a teacher revise her resume to reflect her proficiency with state standards. “Look up the chain to see what your district, county and state are doing, and show how you are up to speed. Always think big picture,” she says.

Cook adds that the purpose of the blog is to educate students by providing up-to-date career-related content tailored to student needs.

The blog is accessible through the Career Services Center Web site, where readers can listen to career development webinars and find career information by industry, resume, curriculum vitae (C.V.) tools and more.

Read the blog.
