Walden University students can participate in academic sessions, access faculty and staff members, gain peer support, and hear political icon Donna Brazile speak at the plenary session on Jan. 22, 2009, in Dallas, Texas. It’s all part of the Academic Residencies’ Winter Session and university commencement at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.

Influential Political Strategist
Brazile, a renowned political commentator and dynamic speaker, uses her diverse experience to address the current state of affairs—from public policy to the recent presidential election. One of the most admired and well-known political strategists today, this author and voting rights leader has worked on every presidential campaign since 1976. She made history in 2000 for her work as Al Gore’s campaign manager and was the first African American to hold such a position in national politics.

Brazile serves as chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Voting Rights Institute (VRI). She is a nationally syndicated columnist, a weekly political contributor for CNN, a political consultant for ABC News and This Week with George Stephanopoulos, and a regular contributor to NPR’s Political Corner. In addition, Brazile writes a column for Roll Call newspaper and Ms. Magazine and serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.

Her numerous awards and honors include Washingtonian magazine’s 100 Most Powerful Women in Washington, D.C., Essence magazine’s 50 Most Powerful Women in America, and Ebony’s 150 most influential African Americans in the country.

“Perspectives on the World” Series
Brazile’s plenary address will be part of Walden’s “Perspectives on the World” series, which brings diverse global views to the Walden community. Past speakers include Jeffrey Goldberg, author and correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, who discussed the possibility of reconciliation in the Middle East; Robin Wright, diplomatic correspondent for The Washington Post, who shared insights on international affairs and foreign policy; and Paul Loeb, author of The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen's Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear, who covered citizen responsibility and empowerment.

Winter Session Residencies
The 14-day Dallas event offers opportunities for professional and academic networking at the largest hotel property in Texas. Participants can attend the Walden University commencement ceremony, network and interact with graduating students from all Walden degree programs, and interact with peers.

Walden residencies help prepare students to be scholar-practitioners; connect them with individual faculty advisement; supply them with tools that enhance writing, research and critical thinking; and connect them with student support staff. The January residencies will also include a poster session of current faculty and student research projects.

About the Location
In the heart of downtown, the Sheraton Dallas Hotel is near many of Dallas' main attractions. Walden has reserved a block of rooms for those attending the residencies and commencement. From the large hotel property, students may either walk or use the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) train to explore the area. Only blocks away, students can enjoy international restaurants, shops and the city's leading historical and arts districts. The hotel itself is home to several on-site restaurants.
