In Memoriam Valerie Futch-Smith, an elementary school teacher from Ludowici, Ga., was pursuing an M.S. in Education.
The Walden University community mourns the loss of master’s student Valerie Futch-Smith, 34, of Ludowici, Ga., who died Feb. 12, 2008. The Otero County, N.M., native was a first-grade teacher at Smiley Elementary School in Ludowici and was halfway through her master’s program.
Futch-Smith loved teaching, visiting the coast and crabbing. Her biggest joy, though, according to her family, was her fourth-grade son.
She is remembered as an outstanding and tireless teacher. Smiley Elementary School Principal Sandy Jones in February called her “very special.”
Teachers and staff at Smiley planted a red oak tree in her memory on the new playground behind the Ludowici school on April 22, 2008. The event commemorated Futch-Smith’s life as an educator and friend.
She is survived by her husband Jimmy, 9-year old son Trysten, mother Nancy Jarka, and grandmother Jennie Futch.
