Obama Inauguration Observed in Dallas

Washington, D.C., came to Texas during Walden’s Winter Session academic residency.

More than 850 Walden University students, faculty and staff crowded into a Dallas ballroom on Jan. 20 to watch the new president of the United States, Barack Obama, take the oath of office.

“We looked at it as a historical moment,” said Walden’s Director of University Events Linda McCormick, “and we could all be there to witness it together.”

With two large screens projecting a live feed from CNN, the Walden students, faculty and staff in the ballroom watched intently and even participated with the Washington, D.C., audience. “When they asked people to stand, they would stand, and when people would pray, they would bow. When they played the ‘Star Spangled Banner,’ people put their hands over their hearts,” McCormick said. “It was like you were really there.”

McCormick said Walden often hosts events for its students at residencies and commencements, but the historical significance of this inauguration made this one of the most memorable. “These are online students,” she said, “so when they can get together it’s really meaningful, but this event just topped the list.”

Presidential Youth Debate
