Walden Students Volunteer in Mexico

Students help make winter less harsh for women in rural Mexico.

In December 2008, members of Walden University’s International Dual Degree Walden Student Association at Universidad del Valle de México’s Querétaro campus delivered supplies, winter clothing, medicine and blankets to a group of 40 Otomi Indian women.

The delivery was part of the student association’s ongoing “Working with Our Community” program, a social change effort that began in 2006. The 115 Walden students in Querétaro collaborated for one month to gather supplies from their friends, family and other educational institutions, including Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro.

The Business of Change
The International Dual Degree Walden Student Association is also working with surrounding communities on a marketing project to help the women sell their handcrafted dolls, blouses and belts. “It is our hope that the marketing project plus a nutritional program will begin the necessary movements to bring change,” said Yolanda Guadalupe Reyes González, the Walden coordinator in Querétaro.

The Effort Continues
In addition to helping the Otomi women, the group has created a Walden library in another community with book donations from students. The group has accumulated more than 500 books.

“As Walden students based in the concept of social change, we want to improve human and social conditions,” González said.

Dual Degrees
Walden’s dual-degree programs allow students from universities in Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica to obtain degrees from Walden University while simultaneously earning degrees at universities in their home countries.

Walden University and Universidad del Valle de México (UVM) offer a dual-degree program to students as part of Walden’s increasing focus as a global university. Walden has students enrolled from more than 70 countries worldwide, and in conjunction with UVM, offers a B.S. in Business Administration dual-degree program. Walden and UVM are part of the Laureate International Universities, a global network of more than 42 accredited online and campus-based universities in 20 countries, serving nearly 500,000 students on more than 100 campuses around the world.
