Presidential Scholarship Recipients Named Recipients' public service goals include facilitating cross-cultural exchanges, creating a heightened level of care for psychological clients and providing an effective guide to economic leadership. Walden University awards $5,000 Presidential Scholarships to graduates of a Walden masters program who pursue a doctorate at Walden. Applicants must demonstrate a personal, continued commitment to public service and demonstrate how their doctorate will improve their professional effectiveness. In May, Walden named three 2009 recipients.
![]() Barbara Bole Program: Master of Public Administration to Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration Title: Lifelong nonprofit professional and volunteer Public Service Goal: To facilitate a cross-cultural exchange in a changing economic and global landscape How the Doctorate Will Improve My Professional Effectiveness: A doctorate in public policy will improve my professional effectiveness by honing research skills and practical applications for advancing a cohesive, productive and effective local, national and global network to advance fair trade, consumer global-consciousness and socio-economic justice in the world.
![]() Levon Margolin Program: M.S. in Psychology to Ph.D. in Psychology Title: Needs assessment counselor trainee in Covina, Calif. Public Service Goal: To ensure that clients are assessed and treated as whole individuals and to bring a greater level of psychological care to the managed care environment How the Doctorate Will Improve My Professional Effectiveness: The doctorate degree will enhance my professional effectiveness by enabling me to reach a higher and more thorough understanding of my clients. The doctorate degree will propel me to a level in which I will be able to expand on the current policies and procedures within the managed care environment to help enable a greater level of care for each client. With a more thorough holistic analysis of the client, as well as a treatment strategy that directly targets the clients needs, a greater level of care can be achieved.
![]() Erickson Conkling Program: Master of Public Administration to Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration Title: Business account representative at Verizon Telecom Public Service Goal: To give the public a guide to effective economic leadership How the Doctorate Will Improve My Professional Effectiveness: It is my intention to translate substantive research detailing the relationship between leadership styles and the equity of organizational systems of economic recompense into a publication of recommendations for others to learn from. This will allow me, via a management position with my current employer, to promulgate leadership policies that hold equity as a social and economic goal.
