Contribution to the Profession Award Dr. Eileen Berg’s study on teacher unions was reviewed by Ontario’s Minister of Education.
![]() Dr. Eileen Berg Berg’s research—which surveyed 63 administrators and 57 teachers—determined that educators are influenced by the actions of teachers unions, and that teachers unions directly affect the morale of educators in Ontario and Canada. Berg’s dissertation concluded that the positive morale of educators and administrators enhances student learning, which in turn improves the human condition of both the student and their surrounding community. Her dissertation brought attention to the negative effects of teachers unions in Canadian schools—a previously underreported subject. Dr. Pamela Harrison and Dr. James Schiro nominated Berg for the award, writing, “Through her willingness to address the issues of teachers unions and their impact on student achievement in Canada … Berg has created an opportunity for social change that has not existed before in Ontario.” Kathleen Wynne, Ontario’s minister of education, reviewed Berg’s study and forwarded it to her staff for review and analysis. Wynne contacted Berg to thank her for her research and commend her on the importance of her findings. Harrison and Schiro also praised Berg for her research that posed a personal and professional risk, writing: “Rarely do we find a student committed to addressing an issue that puts them and their family at risk due to the politically charged nature of the topic. When it happens, the mission of Walden University is truly realized in the student’s work. Dr. Eileen Berg is such a student.” About the Award The Contribution to the Profession Award is presented annually to a graduating student whose program of study or research has made an important contribution to her or his profession.
