Extraordinary Faculty Award Recipients

Walden honored Dr. Tracy Marsh, Dr. Shana Morrell, Dr. Terry O’Banion and Lisa Ward for their exemplary demonstration of the university’s core values.

The Board of Directors established the Extraordinary Faculty Award to be conferred annually on a Walden University faculty member from each college who demonstrates the university’s core values of quality, integrity and student-centered instruction.

The Extraordinary Faculty Award Recipients for 2009 are Dr. Tracy Marsh, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; Dr. Shana Morrell, College of Health Sciences; Dr. Terry O’Banion, The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership; and Lisa Ward, College of Management and Technology.

Dr. Tracy Marsh
College of Social and Behavioral Sciences: Dr. Tracy Marsh
Joseph V. Angarella, a Ph.D. in Psychology student, nominated Marsh, who serves as the chair of his dissertation committee:

“Because of Dr. Marsh, my dissertation came alive. Instead of being a doctoral student floundering through the dissertation process, I began to see that I really could be that agent of change Dr. Marsh modeled for me. Nor was I alone … we were striving together to make important, evocative and sustainable change in the treatment of the disenfranchised. We were not accepting the status quo. Instead, we were challenging it at every corner.”

Read about Angarella in the Walden alumni magazine article “The Last 10 Percent.”

College of Health Sciences: Dr. Shana Morrell
Dr. Stephen D. Arnold from the College of Health Sciences nominated Morrell, his colleague and former faculty advisor:

“Everything she does—every email that she sends, every assignment that she grades, every phone conversation she has and every step of the thesis/dissertation mentoring process that she is involved with—she approaches with quality, with integrity and with student-centeredness.”

Dr. Terry O'Banion
The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership: Dr. Terry O’Banion
O’Banion was nominated by Dr. Laura E. Weidner, a Ph.D. in Education graduate. O’Banion served as Weidner’s dissertation chair and KAM assessor, and continues to act as her mentor: “It is challenging, to say the least, when one tries to capture the essence of Dr. O’Banion and his many contributions to students, faculty, colleagues, universities and the field of education … . His strong spirit, caring approach and unrelenting pursuit of excellence in himself and his students make him an outstanding and extraordinary faculty member.”

Lisa Ward
College of Management and Technology: Lisa Ward
Dr. Ahmed Naumaan, former associate dean of the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science, nominated Ward:

“Lisa Ward’s excellent performance in the classroom, in the faculty community, in service to the school and university, and in research, as well as her constructive activities in the broader community, make her a truly outstanding scholar and practitioner. She is my most valued faculty member whose support, enthusiasm and hard work make the experience of students and faculty enriching and fruitful.”
