See how more than 1,000 volunteers served their communities across the United States and throughout the world.
On October 3, 2009, more than 1,000 members of the Walden University community—students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends—gathered in cities around the world to complete nearly 40 public and community service projects for Walden’s fourth annual Global Day of Service. The Walden community completed 25 projects in 22 U.S. cities, and 14 projects abroad in locales from Panama to Nepal.
The service projects, which doubled in number from 2008, included:
- Rebuilding a house in New Orleans
- Painting, cleaning and repairing schools in Atlanta, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego
- Tutoring students in Atlanta, Cleveland and Jacksonville, Fla.
- Working in food banks in Boston, Houston, Miami, New York and Washington, D.C.
- Painting and repairing community centers in Minneapolis and Detroit
- Teaching English and providing food and supplies to an orphanage in Querétaro, Mexico
- Teaching nutrition techniques to women and children in El Zamorano, Honduras

- Selling recycled baskets in Kathmandu to benefit the Tipling village of Nepal
Volunteers invested a combined 3,166 hours, more than double the 1,452 given in 2008, with an estimated value of $64,112.
